I dedicate this blog entry to the two kids I met in Baguio. Through them, I have learned a lot. Thank you. Thank you.
I always hear people say that the youth are the hope of our land. As part of the youth, I take this as a challenge. I know that a lot of people still look up to us and believe that we can effect changes in our society. They place their trust in us hoping that one day, they will see a better society… a better country.
When I was in Baguio, I met two kids in a public market. They’re around 10 to 12 years old. As early as 5 in the morning, they are already making a living. They will only go home if they have enough money to buy food for their loved ones. As I look at them, I felt disappointed of myself, their parents and our government.
The whole night, I kept on thinking about those kids. I realized that I am so blessed that my parents can provide me with all the things I need and want. I am so lucky that I was able to study in one of the prestigious universities in the country. I am fortunate that I have enjoyed my childhood. Behind my realizations was a guilty feeling. I have almost everything I want but I find it difficult to be contented. I don’t feel contented with the simple things I have. I sometimes want to have more, to have the best. But those two kids, having enough makes them contented and happy. They find happiness in simple things… a thing I admired best!
Now, about their parents… Honestly, I felt too disappointed! Being a parent is always a choice. Once you decided to be one, you should be prepared with all the responsibilities it entails. One should be prepared to give his children decent living and quality education. Given these, I think that their parents failed to do their responsibilities. I AM SORRY TO SAY THESE WORDS! But that’s what I feel and think! As parents, they should have planned the future of their children. Poverty can never be an excuse for them to let their children work. If they cannot send their children in good schools, they should have at least sent them to public schools so that they will not grow illiterate. In that way, they will learn the basics. Their children have the right to enjoy their childhood. They also have the right to education and quality life. They should not deprive their children with their rights. They should learn how to be responsible parents!
What happened to me in Baguio gave me another reason to hate our government. It is a failing government! Our leaders have continuously failed to carry out their mandates. Our government has failed to effect concrete and realistic programs that could promote the welfare of the people especially the children. Education has been one of its least priorities.
Our government is busy solving problems on poverty, graft and corruption. But what are its plans for the youth?! What about education? I believe that our government has failed to realize that one of the best solutions to our problems is education. If the number of illiterates in our country grows, it will just worsen everything. If the youth, who are considered the future of our land, remain uneducated, they will never be able to change our society. Everything will just be mere illusions.
Our leaders should be more sensitive to the needs of the people. They were elected to promote and protect the welfare of Filipinos. They are in power not for them to work for their personal interests but to carry out their mandate.
We, the youth, can make our society a better place to live. We can still provide the next generation a better country. However, we cannot do it alone. We need the guidance, help and support of everyone especially the government.
The family is the basic unit of the society. It is the first teacher of the children. Whatever they see and experience in the family, they will carry it when they grow. I pray that every parent will serve as a role model to his children by being responsible enough to carry out his responsibilities.
